Until recently, Illja Naishuller was only known in his native Russia. As a musician in the rock band Biting Elbows, he also directed their music videos. A music video even caught the attention of Darren Aronofsky. He praised the production which was only shot from the first person perspective like in a video game. Motivated, Naishuller shot a complete action film from the first person perspective (Hardcore with Sharlto Copley, among others), which also became an insider tip internationally. He was then able to create the music video for The Weeknds - False Alarm. After a few provocative - but also praised - music videos for the band Leningrad, it was possible to win the talent of the young director for a Hollywood production. The action film starring Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad) was released in theaters in the summer of 2021

He had the opportunity to overpower the robbers but left it off. Both in the eyes of the police and in those of his son, he has fallen in reputation and seen as a weakling. Nothing happened and no one was injured, so Hutch doesn't see it that closely until the daughter misses her friendship bracelet that evening. This is the trigger that awakens his old talents.
Fazit
Since American films seem polished in contrast to many European and Asian productions, there is a lot of action fluttering in comparison to Hardcore. On the other hand, this film can score with more charm, humor and also a solid, more realistic story. From the current one-man army action heroes such as John Wick or a film with Liam Neeson in the lead role, this film stands out above all with its casualness (and of course the Russian mafia).
Evaluation: A retired top spy who still knows how to assemble and disassemble a variety of weapons, but can no longer do so in the same time as 20 years ago.
